The Sudan Catholic Bishop’s Conference has expressed the need for the SPLM, and parties to the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, to organize public debates on the right to self-determination.
Speaking to the press in Juba, the president of the conference, bishop of Wau Rudolf Deng Majak said that "the Church is worried that time is moving fast" and all community leaders at different levels should encourage open public discussions and debates.
Bishop Majak emphasized that there is still a lot of violence in some parts of Southern Sudan and that the issues of health and education in local communities need to be addressed.
He mentioned that the church has admired the positive things achieved by the Government of National Unity and Government of Southern Sudan but he stressed that there is still more to be done.
