The head of the UN mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo on Saturday accused Laurent Nkunda's rebels and pro-government militia of committing war crimes earlier this week.
Speaking at a news conference in Goma, Alan Doss deplored the killing of civilians in the town of Kiwanja, near Rutshuru, about 80 kilometres north of the Nord-Kivu provincial capital.
The UN Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUC) on Friday fingered combatants in Nkunda's National Congress for the Defence of the People (CNDP) over the murder of civilians in Kiwanja.
Following an inspection team's visit, it said "serious violations of human rights" had been confirmed there.
The investigators "visited 11 communal grave sites, containing at least 26 bodies, fighters and civilians," it said, adding that reports of further loss of life were still being checked out.
