President Omer Al Bashir and the South African President Thabo Mbeki discussed this morning the conditions in Darfur and the work of the United Nations/African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) in the region in addition to the developments following the ICC accusations against President Al Bashir.
South Africa has announced during the bilateral talks the launch of a new initiative for mediation between the Sudanese government and the Darfur armed factions.
The South African proposal comes following a number of initiatives from some international and regional bodies.
On the other hand, the U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and African Union Chairperson Jean Ping have announced that Tunisia's Azouz Ennifar has been appointed Deputy Joint UN-AU Chief Mediator for Darfur.
