The head of the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA) peace delegation, David Nyekorach Matsanga said government forces attacked LRA soldiers accompanying their leader for a meeting with mediators in Rikwamba last Friday.
Speaking to Miraya FM in Juba, Matsanga said the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) is to blame for the failed meeting in Rikwamba.
He said the Chief Mediator to the talks, Dr. Riek Machar has told him that SPLA soldiers at a check-point in Rikwamba did not know that Joseph Kony was due to meet with mediators.
A government official gave the same reasons for failure of the “Rikwamba meeting", which was scheduled to take place on Sunday.
The official said the attack was not planned. However, he said preparation will be made soon for mediators to meet the LRA leader.
Matsanga said the LRA peace delegation returned Sunday to Juba from Nairobi to try to convince the LRA leader to meet with the mediators.
On its part, Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) has said that the exchange of fire last Friday between the LRA and SPLA “was not planed”.
The Spokesperson of the SPLA, Major General Peter Parayang said that there were no casualties in this incident.
According to him, the confusion rose when convoy of trucks from Juba, delivering food to the LRA, was stopped by the SPLA at the check point because the SPLA was not informed about this transport.
The delivery of the food for the LRA was mediated by the Government of Southern Sudan in the course of resumption of the peace talks.
However, Major General Parayang said that the Government of South Sudan did not inform the SPLA authorities about the resumption of talks between the LRA and Ugandan government nor about the convoy delivering the food to the LRA.
