US health authorities acknowledged that they had substantially underestimated the number of new HIV infections in the country, in a study showing that the epidemic is worse than previously thought.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said that a report brought a figure forty percent higher than the previous estimate of new infections a year.
Kevin Fenton, Director of the CDC's National Center for HIV/AIDS, Viral Hepatitis, STD, and TB Prevention said this new picture reveals that the HIV epidemic is worse than previously known and underscores the challenges in confronting this disease.
The study also found that gay and bisexual men as well as African American men and women are the groups most affected by HIV.
