The United States of America abstained from voting on the UN Security Council resolution extending the United Nations/African Union Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) for one year.
The resolution had been complicated by the ICC’s move to indict President Omar al-Bashir for alleged genocide.
The resolution meanwhile noted an African Union request for the Council to postpone the ICC's work but does no more than that.
Fourteen of the Council's 15 members voted in favor but the US abstained.
African countries argued that an indictment of the Sudanese president would damage prospects for peace and that any legal moves should be put off for a year.
But Washington said a delay would send out the wrong message.
