The Regional Coordinator of the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) for Southern Sudan David Gressly, told Miraya FM that the Mission has no connection with the ICC decision which indicts President Al-Bashir for alleged war crimes and crimes against humanity in Darfur.
He pointed out that the Mission will impartially exercise its mandate with the partners to complete the peace process, adding that the ICC resolution will not affect the work of the Mission: "We did not witness any immediate consequences so far, and as you know, the implementation of the Abyei roadmap is still ongoing, and I think this is a very good example of how we hope to implement the Comprehensive agreement, and the withdrawal of the forces is still ongoing. Here in southern Sudan especially, we enjoy good working relations with the Government of South Sudan, and senior officials assured me that this will go on."
Gressly added,"Therefore, we will carry on providing assistance to support the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, and I have contacted all our offices here in south Sudan to continue with the work normally.
I believe we will see progress in the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, and the continuity of the [CPA] agreement should be in the interest of both parties."
UNAMID relocates non-essential staff
In the meantime, the joint United Nations/African Union Mission In Darfur (UNAMID) announced that it will start evacuating its non-essential staff while keeping its troops, due to the recent deterioration of security conditions in Darfur.
This procedure includes around 1800 police officers and 1000 civilian.
