Zimbabweans began voting in a one-sided presidential run-off on Friday after President Robert Mugabe defied mounting world condemnation and calls to postpone an election which the opposition says is a “sham.”
The G8 describes the election as illegitimate while the US says the U.N. Security Council may consider fresh sanctions on the African country next week. The European Commission said it doesn’t recognize the election or its outcome as legitimate. Opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai, who beat Mugabe in the first round of voting in March, withdrew from the run-off last Sunday over violence and intimidation of the supporters of his Movement for Democratic Change by the ruling party.
