The UN food summit in Rome has called for response to the soaring prices of food around the world.
The summit is expected to issue a declaration setting out its proposals.
The summit wants urgent action to help farmers plant more crops this year, but there are disagreements over the role of bio-fuels in driving up the food costs.
Some three billion US dollars has been pledged, although bigger sums will be announced later. The World Food Programme said it will try to source most of its food from the developing countries.
