The Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) demanded the Sudan People’s Liberation Army (SPLA) to withdraw southwards of Abyei area.
The SAF warned that otherwise they will take “decisive actions” against the SPLM administrator in Abyei, Edwdard Lino.
The Director of the SAF Spokesman's Office, Let. Col. Al-Sawarmy Khalil Saad, explained to Miraya FM that they might use force to set things right, as he said.He pointed out that the SAF will remain in their camps in the town.
However, he added that the situation there is now calm.
In first reaction, the SPLM Administrator in Abyei, Edward Lino, considered the expression “decisive actions” a personal threat to his life. And revealed astonishment at the SAF threat.
Speaking to Miraya FM, he, however accused the SAF again of killing civilians and burning down the entire town of Abyei.
JMC reaches agreement on Abyei tensions
Meanwhile, the Joint Military Committee between the Sudan Armed Forces, the Sudan People’s Liberation Army and the United Nations reached an agreement to end the crisis between the SAF and the SPLA in Abyei. The Commander of the UN troops in Abyei, Ravi Padan, said in an in interview with Miraya FM’s Oweis Al Faki that the situation has not improved much since the attack of groups of Al-Misseriya tribes on Sunday.
The Sudan Armed Forces released a press statement calling on the Sudan People’s Liberation Army to withdraw to the south of Abyei.
On the other hand, the UN announced readiness to meet the urgent humanitarian needs of thousands of people who were forced to flee their homes in Abyei due to the fighting there.
The Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary General to Sudan, Ms. Ameerah Haq, said on Sunday that UN assessment teams are currently surveying the needs, especially medical care, water, food, and shelter.
The United Nations estimates the number of those fled Abyei is in the range of thirty to fifty thousand people.
Transitional administration for Abyei to be formed soon
However, President Advisor, Mustafa Othman Ismaeel, revealed from Qatar’s capital, Al-Dawha, that the transitional administration in Abyei will soon be formed to address the security problems and provide services to the citizens.
