Military source in Abyei revealed to Miraya FM that the situation there is relatively calm except for gun shooting every now and then in different parts of the town.
The source said that the Area Joint Military Committee started its meeting in the town this morning.
The source pointed out that all committee members from the United Nations, the Sudan Armed Forces and the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement are participating in the meeting.Meanwhile, the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) accused the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) of attacking the civilians in Abyei forcing hundreds of them to flee the area.
SPLM Administrator in Abyei, Edward Lino, told reporters in Juba that the SAF Brigade 31 is responsible for the current unrest in Abyei. However, the Director of the SAF Spokesman’s Office, Let. Col. Al-Swarmy Khalid Saad, denied that the SAF launched the violence on Abyie or attacked the civilians.
Speaking to Miraya FM, he said that the SPLA troops withdrew southwards and started firing at the town. He pointed out that the SAF troops have not left the town in the first place.
