Eritrean opposition groups meeting in Ethiopia on Wednesday said that they had agreed to join forces and launch a popular uprising against the Asmara government.

The group which formed the Eritrean Democratic Alliance, urged all Eritreans abroad to help them forge a "truly national movement" to overthrow President Isaias Afewerki.

Speaking to the press, the Chairman of the Alliance, Habte Tesfa Mariam, said that the 13 Eritrean opposition groups have settled their differences and adopted a charter which would help them launch a popular uprising.

The Reuters News Agency reported that, Mr. Mariam said if the Alliance came to power, it would resolve the border dispute with Addis Ababa through dialogue.
