The National Population Council for Census endorsed the decision of the Presidency to start the Census exercise on the 22nd of April all over the country.

This was confirmed by the Chairman of the Southern Sudan Census, Statistics and Evaluation Commission.

Isaiah Chol Aruai
Upon arrival at Juba airport, the chairman of the Southern Sudan census, statistics and evaluation commission, Mr. Isaiah Chol Aruai said that the population census council decided “to go ahead implementing the census”, according to the decision of the Presidency.

The statement by the government of southern Sudan is a political statement and the decision of the Presidency is also a political decision, southern Sudan government is entitled to its opinion and it stance. But as far as the directives of the Presidency we are to go ahead in implementing the Census…

He said that after taking this decision the council looked at all the implications of the census delay, and that the extra budget of three point five (3.5) million US dollars has been proposed to cater for enumerators’ salaries, transport cost and other operating cost.
Mr. Aruai also said that the problem of shortage of English language census questionnaires in some states of southern Sudan is being addressed.

He mentioned that the Southern Sudan census, statistics and evaluation commission signed memorandum of understanding with the Central bureau of statistics concerning exchange of information to ensure transparency.

People in Juba expressed their mixed feelings to Miraya FM about the 5th Population and Housing Census.
