The Ministry of Education in the Central Equatorial State has released results of the Basic Education Certificate Examination for the academic year of 2007/2008.
The Ministry said that a number of schools did not perform well, and that the public schools' activities are declining.
In an interview with Miraya FM, the State's Director for Examinations, Wani Lado Lobuju, said that the overcrowding of schools and absence of proper inspection are among major factors that lead to the poor performance of students.
Mr. Lobuju said that “unnecessary holidays” and delay in teachers' salaries, as well as lack of pupils’ text books and teaching equipment are also contributing factors.
Over 2,800 students in the Central Equatoria State sat this year for the Basic Education Certificate Examination while only half of them passed the exams.
The Ministry said that a number of pupils from the Eastern Equatoria and Jonglei States who also sat for the examinations obtained good results.
In terms of individual schools in the Central Equatoria State, Mr. Lobuju said that all pupils from Ustratuna and Mongalla Basic Schools have passed the exams.
