"We are going to embark on disarmament in the first place," says the newly appointed governor of the Jongolei State, Kuol Manyang Juk.

In an exclusive interview with Miraya FM, Governor Juk says he wants to improve the security environment in the State.

Governor Juk urges the concerned authorities to collect all illegally possessed arms and weapons.

Large number of illegal arms

The Governor went on saying that due to the large number of illegal weapons, people in this State have been experiencing for long time tensions and insecurity.

Speaking to Miraya FM Governor Juk said that seizing illegal guns and weapons will be done in close consultation with local chiefs and communities.

The governor said that a request regarding the deployment of the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) in the State has been forwarded to the President of the Government of Southern Sudan (GOSS), Lt. Gen. Salva Kiir Mayardit.

"Their presence in the area will be important not  to use force, but will first give chance for peaceful disarmament...for people to do it on their own," says Governor Juk.

He says that he is so optimistic about the disarmament process, saying that it will be completed within a month or two.

"I am optimistic because all the people have seen the disadvantage of people carrying arms," says the governor.

He added, "that's how we are going to approach the disarmament and establish peace in the area".

Development

The Governor says that in all the 11 Counties of Jongolei State, insecurity and tensions are hindering any development and investments.

"There is now stability in the 9 States of southern Sudan, but Jongolei State remains volatile," he says.

Governor Juk says he wonders why there are deaths when peace has already been achieved.

However, he attributed the instability and insecurity in Jongolei State to the long run tribal clashes in the State.

"A situation that has gone for a very long time has become part of the culture-thats very, very difficult to eradicate," says Juk.

He says that no development will take place in Jongolei if the instability with the killings and insecurity continues to occur in the State.

"Investors can't go, so while the other States are developing, Jongolei will remain undeveloped," he concludes.
