Vice President calls to resolve the crisis of the suspended flow of goods to the south
Thursday, 08 November 2007
The Vice President of the Republic, Ali Osman Mohammed Taha, called on the government of the White Nile State to remove all obstacles hindering the movement of trucks carrying goods between the north and south Sudan.
This came after a dispute between the White Nile and Upper Nile States which lead to the prevention of the trucks from entering the south.
The governor of the White Nile State, Dr. Mohammed Nur Abdullah denied that his government has prevented trucks and barges carrying goods from going to Juba.
He told Miraya FM that traders stopped their movements towards the south after the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) started moving northwards to the White Nile State.
"The River Transport in southern Sudan will never cease its operations," said Mr. Abdullah.
He added, "What happened is that the SPLA forces moved to the north and occupied some villages which caused some tension in the area... and the people and the traders got scared. But there is no such thing asprevention [of movement]."

Speaking to Miraya FM the Spokesman of the SPLA in the Joint Defense Board, Major General Bior Ajang, said that the government of the White Nile State is taking the matter as an excuse to prevent the trucks from entering the south.
He said that the SPLA soldiers have been apresent long the Nile bank for quite a longtime but they did not move northwards.
Major General Ajang added that the joint committee of the Joint Defense Board is discussing the problem.
Civilians in Renk town of the Upper Nile State have expressed worry from an increase in the prices of goods in case the crisis continues between the two states.
