The chairmen of the UN and the AU mediation team, Jan Eliasson and Salim Ahmed Salim assured on Thursday that the peace talks between the government and the Darfur armed factions in Serte, Libya, will begin as scheduled.
Both Chairmen appealed in Libya to the factions who declared their boycott of the talks to participate in the talks which both describe as a final chance to resolve the four year and half conflict in Darfur.
Earlier the UN Security Council released a statement threatening to take actions against any party that seeks to undermine the peace process by hindering the upcoming Darfur negotiations that are scheduled to start tomorrow in the Libyan city of Serte. It further called upon all the involved parties to commit to an immediate ceasefire. Some of the factions which have been meeting in Juba had announced they are not going to participate in the peace talks but they sent two delegates to Libya to attend the opening session of the negotiations and ask for the delay of the talks.
