The ongoing meeting of the Darfur factions in Juba these days under the sponsorship of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement has been suspended for one day to allow for consultations with new delegations.
On Sunday Khamis Abkar, the commander of one of the factions of the Sudan Liberation Movement, arrived from Asmara.
According to the official in charge of the Darfur file in the SPLM, Clement Jada, who spoke to Miraya FM, the results will be announced in a press conference on Monday.
With respect to the efforts aimed at unifying the stand of these factions during the upcoming talks, Jada said: “The efforts are going forward and it is well known that more factions are coming to Juba.
Each time a new faction arrives, it wants to know what has happened.
” The meeting, which opened last Monday, started amid tight security measures with the participation of eight factions that are non-signatories to the Abuja Agreement. There remain the factions led by Abd al-Wahid Muhammad Nur, the leader of a faction of the Sudan Liberation Movement, and Khalil Ibrahim, the leader of the Justice and Equality Movement, which have not taken part in the meeting.
Most participating factions have expressed their reservations about the declared date for the Sirte talks on 27 October.
The leader of a faction of the Sudan Liberation Movement, Ahmad Abd al-Shafi’i, told Miraya FM that the declared date is not practical and that the movements are preoccupied with unifying their ranks.
For his part, Salih Adam Ishaq, the leader of another faction of the Sudan Liberation Movement, pointed to consultations underway among the various factions of the Sudan Liberation Movement to unite the group’s ranks.
Some leaks indicate that the meeting’s final communiqué might include some remarks on the date of the upcoming talks and an announcement on unifying the ranks of the factions of the Sudan Liberation Movement taking part in the Juba meeting.
