Saturday, 13 October 2007

Mufti Mohammed Al-Tantawi has said that he had dropped his legal opinion for the punishment of the Egyptian journalists with 80 lashes over defamation.

Egyptian newspapers had earlier quoted the Sheik of al-Azhar saying during Friday prayers that papers which are spreading rumors and publishing false information its journalists should be lashed.

The Egyptian newspapers condemned any such news regarding it as violation of human rights.

Speaking to Miraya FM a newspaper writer Mohammed Latif said that although Skeikh Tantawi have retracted or provided a new explanation to his statement he meant defamation in a general sense.

"But what is certain is that religious institutions in the Islamic world attempts to employ religion for the services of the State," he said.

He added al-Azhar is one of the biggest religious institutions in the Islamic world.
