The United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) has reiterated that it is not responsible for the safety of the former humanitarian coordinator of the Sudan Liberation Movement, Suleiman Jamous, if he leaves the Mission’s hospital in Kadugli.
The Spokesman of the Mission, Ali Hamati, said UNMIS is exerting efforts to reach a compromise with the Sudanese government to permit Jamous to leave the hospital for treatment.
"It is not for UNMIS to provide guarantees relating to Suleiman Jamous's future behavior," Mr. Hamati told Miraya FM.
Departure postponed
He said that Mr. Jamaous is a patient not a prisoner.
"We understand that the government has committed to facilitate Mr. Jamous's participation in the Darfur peace process," Hamati said, adding that the request was maded by the AU/UN special envoys.
"UNMIS has been discussing with the government for several months the conditions under which Mr. Jamous will leave the UN hospital".
Speaking to Miraya FM, Mr. Jamous, said that he has postponed his departure from the hospital.
He added that he has discussed this matter personally with the commander of the UN Mission in Sudan who visited the hospital.
However, Jamous said he is losing patience, adding that he has other options to deal with his issue.
