The World Health Organization has revealed that fifty two people have died from cholera and over seven hundred infections were reported in eastern Sudan following recent heavy rainfalls and floods in Kassala and Al -Gadharif States.
The Ministry of Health has acknowledged the situation, but according to the Spokesperson of the Ministry Dr.Al-Sheikh Al Siddik, the number of the cases is not an evidence of an epidemic.
On another hand, the WHO Emergency Programme Coordinator in Sudan, Dr. Ahmed Al Janaini, said Khartoum is cholera free, contrary to Al-Gadharif and Kassala States where the situation is epidemic.
The Ministry's acknowledgement should serve into taking proper measurements to curb the disease ; otherwise, further negligence may lead to a greater crisis similar to the one faced back in the year 1985 when cholera outbroke and spread across the country.
