The Egyptian embassy in Khartoum has denied reports that 4 Sudanese nationals were were killed by Egyptian guards at the Egyptian-Israeli border while trying to cross illegally into Israel.
The Acting Media Officer at the embassy, Sulaiman Ismail, said the 4 Sudanese were only injured while attempting to penetrate the closed border.
Ismail added that they were taken to hospital and the Sudanese embassy in Cairo was informed immediately.
In a letter to the Egyptian Minister of Interior, Human Rights Watch, yesterday called on Egyptian authorities to immediately investigate allegations that Egyptian border guards killed Sudanese nationals trying to cross the Egypt-Israeli border.
The letter was sent following Israeli media reports of the alleged incident.
"The four Sudanese who tried sneaking into Israel through the Egyptian boarder have been intercepted by barbed wire and were wounded," Mr. Ismail said.
"This happened on the 2nd of August, in the morning," he added.
He said that the Sudanese were admitted to Alareesh General Hospital to be treated under the supervision of the Egyptian authorities.
