The meeting of the Darfur rebels in Arusha, Tanzania is continuing for the second day. Ten Darfur rebel movements who are non-signatories to the Abuja agreement are participating in the talks being mediated by the United Nations and the African Union (AU). The talks are aimed to find a common position for the Darfur rebels to start negotiations with the Sudanese government. However, an influential figure in the Darfur rebel groups, Abdelwahid Mohammed Al-Nur declined to take part in the talks. The special envoy of the United Nations to Darfur, Jan Eliason, said that he is feeling for the first time that there is a hope for Darfur.Speaking to Miraya FM an expert in Darfur Affairs, Abdallah Adam Khatir, said that the absence of Abdelwahid Al-Nur from the talks will have no negative impact on the outcome of the Arusah talks.
"This does not mean that the out come of the meeting will be negative, but it may serve the fundamental issues of the Darfur crisis," Mr. Khatir said. He said, "the interaction of the international community involve all of us as observers because the solution to the Darfur crisis is now open". Meanwhile, the African Union had condemned threats made by the SLM-Minnawi faction against its personnel in North Darfur State. The AU said in a statement, 20 armed men affiliated to SLA-Minnawi faction intimidated its personnel in its headquarters in Al-Fashir town of North Darfur State. The African Union expressed their sorrow to such threats in a time when the international community is trying to maintain security and peace in the region.
