Several cases of  Cholera infections have  been reported  in Al-Gadharif State. The State's Health Ministry Director, Omer Mekki reported that the disease has spread along the Ethiopian border due to people’s use of contaminated water wells that were closed by the state. Mekki said it has not yet become an epidemic and that the Health Ministry has launched a cleansing and sanitation campaign:

"We can’t call this as an epidemic, because otherwise the gravity of it would be much bigger, and the epidemic is not usually restricted to a limited area. There is a certain percentage which decides the situation of an epidemic. Anyhow, we have reports of fifty six infected cases, out of around 600 thousand population number, which does not make this an epidemic."
