SSDDRC suspends disarmament exercises in Jonglei State |

The Southern Sudan Disarmament, Demobilization and Re-integration Commission (SSDDRC) have temporarily suspended the disarmament exercises in Jonglei State.The Commissioner for the SSDDRC, Brigadier-General Arop Mayak, said that the suspension is due to the current evaluation of the past exercises. General Mayak said the Commission does not have any mandate to forcefully collect guns from armed civilians. General Mayak added that the responsibility of the SPLA is to create buffer zones to protect disarmed communities from becoming vulnerable to raids by the armed tribes.

Brigadier-General Arop Mayak said there must be greater collaboration between Sudan and the neighboring States in combating cattle rustling and controlling the proliferation of small arms across the common borders to achieve sustainable and credible disarmament.
