Turabi boycotts President's "Sudanese people initiative" PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 11 October 2008

The chairman of the Popular National Congress Party Dr. Hassan Abdulla al-Turabi has stated that his party is boycotting the Sudanese people initiative announced by President al-Bashir because he said the President resorted to the initiative only after the ICC prosecutor asked the ICC to issue an arrest warrant accusing him of committing war crimes in Darfur.

Al Turabi told Miraya FM that his party for a long time tried to convince the national congress party of the need to resolve the conflict in Darfur but in vain.

President al-Bashir declared the Sudanese people initiative during his visit to Darfur recently. The President will address the opening session of the initiative next Thursday.

Meanwhile, the African Union has decided to send a mission to subdue tensions between Sudan and Chad following a resolution by the African Union peace and Security Council.

The African Union said it will send a mission to Chad and Sudan to be chaired by the former President of Burundi Biyar Beyoya to discuss the conditions on joint boarders.
