A Report released today by Carter Center and the University of Cambridge says that Trachoma eye infection cases are very high in Southern Sudan.
The research says the prevalence of the disease is due to the civil war and worsening of health services.
The United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has called on the nations of the world to join hands to face global challenges.
He added that the challenges are becoming more complex, and urged countries to work together to face them.
Miraya report
"Trachoma is a contagious disease caused by a bacterial infection of the eye. If untreated, the infection may lead to blindness over time.
The World Health Organization (WHO) is leading an international alliance of national governments and several organizations to work for the global elimination of trachoma by the year 2020.
In Sudan, researchers say that at least one person in every household in southern Sudan is found with clinical signs of Trachoma.
According to a recently conducted survey, Ayod County in Jonglei State has one of the highest infection rates recorded in the world. The survey further highlights the urgent need of antibiotics and corrective surgery to treat the disease.
Moreover, WHO estimates that about six million people worldwide are visually impaired by Trachoma, and that more than one hundred and fifty million poor people of rural areas in developing countries are in need of treatment?
The disease is still rampant in the poorest regions of Africa, Asia and the Middle East and some parts of Latin America and Australia".
