Senior Presidential Assistant, head of Sudan People's Liberation Movement Minni Arkou Minnawi said that the Joint United Nations/African Union Mission in Sudan (UNAMID) has failed so far to protect civilians in Darfur.
Minnawi told Miraya FM that UNAMID forces stand as a ‘spectator' while the movement's locations and IDP camps are falling under the attack of the armed forces, as he put it.
He added that the movement may decide on engaging in open confrontation with government forces if the attacks do not cease.
On the other hand, Minnawi attributed his refusal to participate in the High Committee formed by the government to deal with the International Criminal Court (ICC) crisis, to the "stalling" of the National Congress Party in dealing with the case.
Minnawi added that the solution of the crisis lies in dealing legally with the Criminal Court rather than politically, noting that consultations and arrangements are being made in preparation for his upcoming visit to Washington.
Earlier, President of the Republic Omer Al-Bashir appointed a high level Crisis Committee, headed by his First Deputy Salva Kiir Mayardit to counter the International Criminal Court charges.
The Committee also includes the membership of Vice President Ali Othman Taha, Senior Presidential Assistant Minni Minnawi and others. However, Minawi has not attended any meeting of the Committee since its inception last July.
