The day today marks the third anniversary of the death of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) Leader, Dr. John Garang De Mabior, in a plane crash in south Sudan on the 30th of July 2005.
Juba is also celebrating the commemorations.
The First Vice President of the Republic and President of the Government of Southern Sudan and the Chairman of the SPLM, Lt. General Salva Kiir Mayardit, is expected to address this evening a mass gathering at the burial site of Dr John Garang in Juba. Citizens in Wau town of Western Bahr el-Ghazal gathered earlier at Saint Mary Cathedral Church on the same occasion.
The Prayers brought together citizens from the Muslim and Christian communities in Wau town as well as the State Government officials.
Addressing the congregation, the Governor of the Western Bahr el-Ghazal State, Lt. Gen. Mark Nyipuoch Ubong, urged the citizens to follow the vision of Dr John De Garang.
Speaking for the first time on the indictment of President Bashir by the International Criminal Court (ICC), Governor Ubong said that if the indictment obstructs peace then it is rejected.
The incident that took the life of Dr. John De Garang reminds people of the riots and security unrest witnessed by many cities in Sudan following the announcement of his death, which lead to the death of hundreds of people.
