JIUs in Abyei take over security PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 27 July 2008
The Joint Integrated Units (JIUs) in Abyei took over the task of security in the area.

This came after the withdrawal of the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) and the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) from the area.

Speaking to Miraya FM, the Commander of the Brigade 31 in Abyei, Brigadier Osman Ali Jarnal, said that the withdrawal of the Brigade from the area is in accordance with the implementation of the Abeyi road map.

The JIUs received 400 soldiers as part of the units.

The Commander of the JIUs in Abyei, Brigadier Doc Valentino, said that the integrated forces will maintain stability in the area in preparation for the return of the displaced people.

The United Nations meanwhile said that the withdrawal of the other forces from Abyei is a step forward for the deployment of the joint police forces to the area.

The Regional Coordinator of the United Nations Mission in Sudan, David Gressly, told Miraya FM that the UN and the other humanitarian agencies will help in repatriating the displaced people back to their areas after security is maintained in Abyei.
