The United Nations Spokeswoman Michele Montas said that the UN cannot intervene in the rulings of the International Criminal Court, which target President Omer Al-Bashir.
She told reporters that "the Secretary-General's position is very clear," stressing that "the International Criminal Court is independent. And that the United Nations Secretariat cannot interfere in anything related to the International Criminal Court."
Montas was referring to a request made by the African Union on Monday before the UN Security Council to postpone the court's actions against Al-Bashir.
Meanwhile, Nigerian Foreign Minister Ojo Maduekwe told reporters that "the African Union asked the UN Security Council to defer the procedures of the International Criminal Court in order to avoid jeopardizing the peace process" in Sudan.
He also asked for a delay within the rules of the Rome Statute, which stipulated the establishment of the Court ten years ago.
For his part, President Omer Al-Bashir reiterated Sudan government's refusal of all forms of political blackmail and pressure exerted by anti- Sudan international powers.
While addressing a delegation from the Arab Lawyers Union yesterday, Al-Bashir said that the intention behind what is happening now is to impede the upcoming electoral process, of which the people will vote in favor of the current government, as he put it.
In the same context, President Omer Al-Bashir begins tomorrow a visit to South Darfur State amid expectations of issuing decrees supporting the return of the displaced to their villages and the expansion of water, electricity and health services.
