South Sudan Legislative body backs peaceful pursue of Kony PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 02 July 2008
The South Sudan Legislative Assembly backed the option to peacefully pursue the Lords Resistance Army leader to sign a final peace agreement reached in Juba in April this year. Addressing the South Sudan Legislative Assembly, the Vice President of the Government of South Sudan, and chief mediator to the Ugandan peace talks, Dr. Riek Marchar said that a peaceful pursuing of Joseph Kony to sign the final agreement is a better option than resorting to military action.

On Monday, Dr. Marchar called on the Uganda People's Defense Forces (UPDF) to leave southern Sudan territories after reports that the army was involved in killing innocent civilians late last month in south Sudan.

The Ugandan Army was officially deployed in south Sudan in early 2000 to pursue the LRA.

The Assembly condemned attacks by the LRA in Nabanga.

It resolved that more SPLA forces be deployed at border points to protect citizens.

The assembly also resolved that investigations be carried out to ascertain damage caused by the LRA.
