Richard Williamson concludes deliberations with Kiir PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 31 May 2008
kiir_3.jpgThe US special envoy to Sudan, Richard Williamson, concluded his visit to Juba after meeting the First Vice President and President of the government of southern Sudan, Salva Kiir Mayardit.
The US envoy discussed with Salva Kiir the Abyei crisis and its humanitarian problems in addition to the southern Sudan relations with America.
A leading member in the SPLM, Dr. Luka Biong, told Miraya FM that the two sides discussed that all forces should be withdrawn out of Abyei and the Joint Integrated Units and the UN should take control of the area.

The office of the chairperson of the SPLM of the Abyei Administrative area meanwhile released a report saying that an eight-man committee to coordinate relief to the area has been formed.

The Chairperson of the SPLM in Abyei, Edward Lino, said that the committee and the government of south Sudan will coordinate with the national and international bodies that are ready to intervene and assist the people of Abyei.

Mr. Lino said the committee will be responsible to receive and direct all funds to Abyei or purchase relief items needed.

He added that the committee may form sub-committees to assist in carrying out duties, and it will present monthly reports to the Chairperson, the office of the government of southern Sudan and to the office of the Secretary General of the SPLM.

On the other hand, aid agencies confirmed that they are fighting against time to provide support to tens of thousands of displaced people from Abyei following the latest skirmishes.

The spokesperson of the United Nations for Humanitarian Affairs Orla Clinton, ruled out the return of the displaced to the region in the near future.

Mrs. Clinton added that the World Food Programme handed two hundred and twenty tones of humanitarian aid to be distributed to the citizens.

The leader of the Popular Congress Party, Dr Hassan Al Turabi meanwhile warned that Abyei crisis, might become a beginning of civil war in Sudan.

Speaking to Miraya FM, Al Turabi said that he had discussed with the American Envoy Richard Williamson the means to solve the crisis.
