Renewed fighting between the Sudan Armed Forces and the Sudan’s People’s Liberation Army erupted in Abyei today, two days following the signing of a cease-fire agreement by the Joint Military Committee in the region under the auspices of the United Nations Mission in Sudan.
The Commander of the UN troops in Abyei, Ravi Padan told Miraya FM that the fighting erupted between the two armies at down today and lasted for over three hours.
He added that the number of casualties is unclear till this moment.
Meanwhile, the global relief agencies have begun distributing food and essential items to citizens, but the return of clashes hinders the provision of assistance to afflicted people.
For his part, the SPLM official in Abyei, Edward Lino told Miraya FM that his administration will work in coordination with some relief organizations to provide aid to the affected people.
The stalemate over the boundaries and status of Abyei has been one of the major stumbling blocks preventing the full implementation of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement signed by the National Congress Party and Sudan People’s Liberation Movement in 2005.
