Monday, 19 May 2008
The Joint Military Committee between the Sudan Armed Forces, the Sudan People’s Liberation Army and the United Nations reached an agreement to end the crisis between the SAF and the SPLA in Abyei.

The commander of the UN troops in Abyei, Ravi Padan, said in an in interview with Miraya FM that the situation has not improved much since the attack of groups of Al-Misseriya tribes on Sunday.

The Sudan Armed Forces released a press statement calling on the Sudan People’s Liberation Army to withdraw to the south of Abyei.

Meanwhile, the UN announced its readiness to meet the pressing humanitarian needs of thousands of people who were forced to flee their homes in Abyei since fighting erupted there over the last few days.

The Deputy Special Representative of the UN Secretary General to Sudan Ms. Amira Haq said on Sunday that UN assessment teams are currently surveying the needs, especially medical care, water, food, and shelter.

The United Nations estimates the exact number of those displaced from Abyei between 30 to 50 thousand people.
