Khalil Ibrahim calls for peace talks with the government PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 19 May 2008

The leader of the Justice and Equality Movement, Dr. Khalil Ibrahim called on the Sudanese Government to opt for peace talks by the end of the year.

He said that the alternative to peace talks is to wage a full-scale war.

Speaking to Reuters News Agency, Khalil called on Egypt to release three members of the Justice and Equality Movement who were arrested there following the attack on Omdurman

Dr. Khalil also called for the resignation of the International Mediation Team.

The Sudanese government had earlier suspended negotiations with the Justice and Equality Movement in the aftermath of the attack on Omdurman.

In his part, President Al-Bashir stressed the government’s commitment to peaceful coexistence with neighboring countries.

AU Chairman condemns attack on Omdurman:

Al-Bashir said during a meeting with the Chairman of the African Union Commission, Jean Ping, that the borders between Chad and Sudan should be used for mutual interest.

A delegation from the AU Commission, headed by its Chairman, Jean Ping, has visited northern Darfur State to check the situation in the area and  the progress of the joint AU-UN forces deployment in Darfur.

Speaking to Miraya FM, Mr. Ping said that the AU strongly condemns the acts of violence which occurred in Omdurman recently.

Detained Jamous family members released:

Meanwhile, the security authorities released six members of the family of the leading figure in the SLM-Unity faction Suleiman Jamous after a ten-hour detention.

Salah son of Suleiman Jamous, told Miraya FM that they were detained without being accused except for being of Suleiman Jamous’ family. He expected more harrassments.
