Saturday, 10 May 2008
The First Vice Presdient and President of the Government of Southern Sudan (GOSS), Salva Kiir Mayardit, said that the Sudan People's Liberation (SPLM) Second National Convention is suspended due to the current situation in the country.

The SPLM Second National Convention was supposed to kick-off on Sunday in Juba.

"I agreed with my collogues in the SPLM to suspend the Second SPLM National Convention so that we can all participate in the stability of the country, to achieve a comprehensive peace especially in Darfur," Kiir told the press in Juba on Saturday night.

Mr. Kiir said that he had been in continuous contacts on the Presidential level, and they agreed on a number of procedures and precautionary measures to deal with the situation.

"What had happened is strongly condemned, unfortunately it will affect all the procedures which will not help in resolving the issues," he said.

The First Vice President said that the Darfur issue is a political problem which should be resolve through dialogue.

"And to persue with it to reach a fair and satisfactory peace agreement to all the parties," said Kiir.

On Friday, the Justice and Equality Movement attacked Omdruman, north Khartoum.

The Sudan Armed Forces said that it repulsed and chased the rebels out of the Omdruman area.

Salva Kiir said that the Comprehensive Peace Agreement should be use as a symbol in resolving the remaining issues in the country, specially the Darfur problems.

However, Mr. Kiir urged the State’s intuitions especially the law enforcers to properly handle the situation in accordance to the Constitution, and to implement the law for all the citizens equally without exceptions
