The governor of the Lakes State, Daniel Awet Akot, called for a one-week extension of the 5th Sudan population and housing Census in his State.
Mr. Akot said the extension was necessary to make up for the three counties in the Lakes state, which were not counted properly.
Speaking to the press, Mr. Akot said, “The percentage of the census success in the State was 70% in eight counties”.
Mr. Akot said that census exercise was delayed in some counties because of the absence of mapping, transport and other challenges.
He said that the most affected counties are the North and Central Rumbek Counties and the town itself.
The Central Statistic Bureau meanwhile said that the proportion of the implementation of the 5th Sudan Population and Housing Census, which ended on Tuesday, has reached up to ninety five percent.
The Chief Supervisor of Census, Dr. Abdul Baqi Gilani, told Miraya FM that there are no instructions for the extension of the census which began on the twenty-second of last month.
However, the Chairman of the South Sudan Census Commission Isaiah Chol said that his Commission has successfully completed the enumeration exercise with a coverage rate of 90 to 95 percent. Speaking to the press in Juba, Mr. Chol cited four major challenges faced by his commission during this exercise which include: insecurity, influx of returnees, heavy rains and unmapped areas.
Mr. Chol also said this being the first time for Southern Sudanese to conduct census by and for themselves; it has been successful with no State reaching 100% and Eastern Equatoria rating the least performed State.
In an exclusive interview with Miraya FM, the Chairman of the Central Statistics Bureau, Yassin Al-Haj Abidin, said that areas that were not covered by the Census, in Darfur, southern Sudan and South Kordofan, will be handled technically by making an estimate of the population in these areas according to the last census conducted in Sudan in 1993.
Mr. Abdine said that the census process is facing great challenges in South Kordofan. He accused the SPLM of obstructing the census process in the State.
