5th Population and Housing Census kicks off in Sudan PDF Print E-mail

The Census exercise has started all over Sudan in today’s early morning.

First Vice President, President of the Government of Southern Sudan, Salva Kiir Mayardit, urged all southern citizens to get themselves counted.In a press release issued by his office in Juba, President Kiir called upon the people in southern Sudan to stay in their places so that the enumerators count them.

 

Salva Kiir further stressed the importance of the Census for proper planning of public services and infrastructure, and for the next year’s elections and referendum in the year 2011.

He assured the public that the government provides necessary logistics and security to facilitate the census process.

Meanwhile, the Director of the National Statistics Bureau, Yassin Al-Haj Abdine said in a press conference on Monday that this year’s Census is comprehensive.

He also pointed out the economic, social and political benefits of the Census this time.

 

The population Census is one of the issues included in the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA).

The process aims to enhance development planning and provision of services, i
t is also a key aspect of the distribution of power and resources among the states of Sudan.
