Sunday, 20 April 2008
The Government of Southern Sudan has declared Tuesday the 22nd of April 2008 a public holiday to mark the start of the 5th National Population and Housing Census all over Southern Sudan.  The Southern Sudan Minister of Labor Awut Deng Acuil announced that movement between towns and states shall be prohibited on that day, he called on the State Governors, County Commissioners, Payam Administrators and Traditional Authorities to cooperate with the census enumerators.

The Minister further urged all citizens and residents of southern Sudan to give truthful and accurate information to census personnel.

The United Nations Secretary General has welcomed the intention of Sudan’s National Government to proceed with the census.

Meanwhile the Chairman of Central Bureau for Census and Statistics Dr. Yassin Haj Abdeen has warned the states that used to transfer their original people to stop doing that, adding such action will cause shortage in the Census forms and equipment as he said.

In northern Kordofan State, the Chairman of the Statistics Bureau Dr. Suliman Adam Aldey denied media reports that said four persons were killed and more others were injured due to reasons related to the Census, speaking to Miraya FM Aldey said that, what had happened was that a person was hit by a Census vehicle in Gebesh locality, pointing out that all preparations were completed for the census kick off.

Meanwhile, the General Director for Census in the Red sea State, Mohamad Babikir revealed the lack of 110 enumerators and cadres in all the State’s cities,
Babikir added that the shortage has come due to the Defect in the experimental Census conducted by the United Nations, two years ago, adding that an urgent workshop is going on in the state to train enumerators.
