WFP and Eastern Equatoria agree on food aid

The Caretaker Governor for Eastern Equatoria Johnson Juma said that the issue of hunger in the state which led to closure of some schools has been resolved. He added that an agreement was reached between his government and the World Food Program (WFP) to provide food rations for two months to the affected in the State.

EU establishes election observation mission in Sudan

The European Union has established on Thursday an elections observation mission in Sudan to monitor the upcoming general elections. The mission comprises over 130 observers from 22 different European countries. Addressing the launch ceremony in Khartoum, the Chief Mission Observer, Veronique De Keyser, said that the observers will be deployed in all 25 states of the country.

Railway linking north and south inaugurated

The President of the Republic, Omar Al Bashir, and the First Vice President, Salva Kiir Mayardit, officially inaugurated on Thursday the Babanusa-Wau railway line at the Wau Station. Addressing the ceremony, President Bashir revealed that more development projects are in store for Wau, including construction of a new power station and airport as well as a water network.

Candidate for Unity State governorship claims dozen of supporters arrested

Independent candidate contesting for governorship of Unity State, Angelina Teny, has accused state authorities of detaining a number of her supporters. Speaking to Radio Miraya, Teny pointed out that the current atmosphere in the state is ‘unsuitable' for holding free and fair elections.

Sudan Government and JEM start direct peace talks in Doha

Direct peace talks between the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) and the government began on Wednesday in the Qatari capital Doha. Reuters News Agency reported that the Justice and Equality Movement said that April's legislative and presidential elections should be postponed so that the group and the millions suffering in Darfur from a seven-year rebellion could participate.

Illegal lodgings near Juba markets come under attack

The Commissioner of Juba County, Pius Subek, has criticized the use of illegal lodgings near Juba markets for immoral activities. He warned that such lodgings “are spoiling the future of the youths in Southern Sudan.” Meanwhile, Commissioner Subek said that the State authorities have banned the importation of plastic bags adding that businessmen have until June to sell their stocks before the ban order comes into effect.

2 million IDPs return to South Sudan, IOM reports

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) has confirmed that by the end of 2009 over 2 million Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) have returned to Southern Sudan with the facilitation of IOM and Southern Sudan Relief and Rehabilitation Commission since the signing of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement in 2005.

New railway line to be inaugurated in South Sudan

A new railway line connecting Babanusa with Wau will be inaugurated Thursday in Western Bahr el Ghazal State.The First Vice President of the Republic, and South Sudan President, Salva Kiir Mayardit has arrived Wednesday in Wau town, where he is expected to be joined later by the President of the Republic, Omar Al Bashir ahead of the inauguration ceremony.

National Congress Party signs Electoral Code of Conduct

The African Union announced that the National Congress Party has signed the Electoral Code of Conduct in Khartoum. In a released press statement, the Union said that the voluntary code facilitates self regulation for the political parties in the upcoming elections.

Salva Kiir: South Sudan referendum more important than April elections

The First Vice President and President of the Government of Southern Sudan, Salva Kiir Mayardit, said that the Southern Sudan referendum is more important than the upcoming elections scheduled in next April. Addressing the 14th extraordinary summit of the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development (IGAD) in Nairobi, Kiir said if there is any postponement of the general elections, it should not affect the referendum process scheduled for 2011.
