Report: Half of WFP food aid in Somalia does not reach intended recipients

The United Nations World Food Program (WFP) said it is conducting an internal review following a report that as much as half of the food aid it distributes in Somalia ends up in the hands of corrupt contractors, radical Islamic militants and local UN staffers.

US Senate passes LRA bill

The United States Senate passed a bill aimed at devising a strategy for stopping the insurgency by Uganda's rebels of the Lord's Resistance Army (LRA). This came after a group of anti-LRA activists camped out for 11 days in front of Tom Coburn's office, the Oklahoma Senator who put a hold on the bill some weeks ago.

49 to be charged with murder after communal violence in Nigeria

Nigerian police say 49 people are to be charged with murder after communal violence left scores of villagers dead. Police spokesman Mohammed Lerama told the BBC that most of those facing charges are Muslims from the Fulani group, adding that the number of those arrested since the killings near the city of Jos has risen to 200.

Nigerians demand appearance of ailing leader

Hundreds of Nigerians gathered in the capital Abuja today for a march to the Presidency to demand the appearance of ailing leader, Umaru Yar'Adua, two weeks after he returned from a Saudi hospital. The 58-year-old leader has not been seen in public since being flown back after three months of treatment in Jeddah for a heart condition. There have been no announcements on his health but Presidency sources say he remains in intensive care.

State of emergency declared in Plateau State

Nigerian Acting President, Goodluck Jonathan, has declared a state of emergency in Plateau State following Sunday’s ethnic violence in which at least 500 people were killed in villages near the central city of Jos. Security forces were on high alert to prevent any retaliatory attacks in neighbor States.
