Farmers facing possible financial ruin have been given a reprieve after President Omer Al Bashir issued a directive to reevaluate farmers’ loan payments in light of last season’s poor agricultural performance. Head of Farmer’s Union in AlqadarifState, Karam Allah Abas, said the presidential decree permits debts to be deferred and rescheduled. The former National Farmer’s Head also added that banks will continue to fund farmers into the next agricultural season.
Abas added that Sudan’s central bank will be instructing all other banks on the new loan procedures in the coming days.
Drought throughout Sudan has caused extensive crop failure in an already tenuous agricultural industry. One third of Sudanese farmers are at risk of been hit by debt and crop failure.
